What are the most popular themes and products for children’s parties? What is the most popular license you are currently selling?

Our monthly column is devoted to what works and what doesn’t – for our readers, from our readers

“What are the most popular themes and products for children’s parties?”

There are always the trendy themes with whatever superhero or movie is out. Then there are the classics such as Elmo, Barney and Winnie the Pooh. I am also seeing a surge in non-licensed themes like ladybug, circus, jungle, fairies, luau and sports. There are also some more unique ones like magician, outer space and red carpet Hollywood-esque events.

As for products – balloons, balloons and more balloons. Kids can never get enough of them. We had a dad get 80 helium-filled balloons the other day for his 4-year-old to wake up to. I also see a lot of parents setting up candy buffets for the party favors.

This year themed children’s parties are especially exciting. We have decorated with cupcake balloons, Candy Land, vampires and still lots of pirates and superheroes.
Princesses have so many choices, but this year there’s the added twist of wearing fancy tutus. We create a lot of Quinceañeras, so don’t forget the tweens in leopard, zebra with hot pink and animal prints as accents.

Color is everywhere! Watch out for exciting looks with outrageous orange, limey lime, hot berry pink and great shades of blues.

I am finding out that kids are going more for what I call the generic themes – princess, fire trucks, pirates, pool party, etc. I am getting away from the license products for two reasons – sell-through ability, as the big box stores sell it and I can’t beat their pricing; and the inability to predict what is actually going to be hot, and what the representatives want you to believe will be hot. As a result, I am bringing in more nonlicensed product.
